Supporting Local — Why It Matters

Weald Editor

From farm shops to independent bookshops, spending locally keeps the character of our villages alive. We explain why it counts.

Every pound spent at an independent shop, a local farm, or a village café circulates through the community in ways that online purchases simply can't replicate. Research by the New Economics Foundation suggests that £1 spent locally generates around £1.76 in local economic activity — compared to just £0.36 when spent at an out-of-town chain.

In the Weald, we are fortunate to have a wealth of independent producers, artisans, and traders. From heritage grain flour milled in Mayfield to rare-breed meat from the farms above Uckfield, the quality of locally sourced food and goods is exceptional.
