Crowborough Bakery Wins Great Taste Award

Weald Editor

The Beacon Bakehouse has been awarded two gold stars for its sourdough loaves made with locally milled flour.

A small artisan bakery on Crowborough High Street has earned national recognition, picking up two coveted gold stars at this year's Great Taste Awards for its signature wild-fermented sourdough.

The Beacon Bakehouse, run by husband-and-wife team James and Sarah Phelps, uses heritage grain flour stone-milled at a farm just outside Mayfield. "Everything we bake is rooted in this landscape," says James. "The grain, the water, even the wild yeast — it all comes from right here in the Weald."

The bakery, which opened in 2023, also supplies bread to several local farm shops and pubs across the area.
